Marshall Sanborn House

2 Heath Lane
postcard photo @ 1910

  • October 5, 1825, this land is part of a 7 1/2 acre lot purchased by Daniel Heath from Dr. Ebenezer Howe.
  • June 17, 1833, Daniel Heath sells the property with Heath's house to Oliver Frost.
  • March 20, 1847, Oliver Frost sells the entire parcel to Tobias Lord & Andrew Hobson.
  • March 24, 1847, Daniel Heath issues quit claim relinquishing all right in this property to Lord & Hobson.
  • September 12, 1848, Andrew Hobson sells his interest in this lot and buildings to Tobias Lord.
  • In the 1850 census, Robert S. Stone, 35, his wife Drucilla, 31, & his daughter Mary J, 8, are listed as living in Steep Falls (in a home with Stephen H. Knapp, 25, blacksmith, & Charles F. Warren, 37, millman) but it is not clear where. Robert is listed as a "millman" & may have worked for Tobias Lord.
  • September 25, 1854, Tobias Lord sells to Levi Sanborn, (for $172) what appears to be a vacant lot of land on Heath Lane, starting 6 rods from the corner of Heath Lane & the County Road, (which will become the Levi Sanborn lot,) reserving the right of 1 rod in width now travelled from the county road by the Robert S. Stone house to the Robert Ridlon House to be used in common by us & our heirs.
It is clear that the Stone family is living here in the Robert S. Stone house. Tobias must be renting the house to them as he soon sells the property to Betsy Small. The 1 rod right of way will become Heath Lane.
  • November 2, 1858, Tobias Lord sells (for $100) to Betsy Small (Drucilla's mother)of Limington, land on the northeast corner of Heath Lane, 6 rods along the Lane to Levi Sanborn land, back 5 rods, then to the County Road & back to the beginning... "excepting the encumbrance of the buildings now on said land ... which buildings I do not convey".
It looks like Small has purchased the house but not the other buildings. These are probably smaller out buildings that could be moved later.

By 1858, Tobias Lord had been living across the Lane for 20 years & was probably using the lot for barns, outbuildings, workshops, storage, etc., in addition to the house he sold to Betsy Small.

Betsy Small eventually willed or gave this property to her daugher Drucilla who had been married to Robert S. Stone.

  • 1860 census lists Drucilla Stone, 42, seamstress & head of household, Mary Stone, 18, Winfield S. Stone, 16, carpenter, & Eliza A. Small, 32, seamstress.
Robert S. Stone must have died by now as there is no mention of him in this census.
  • 1870 census records indicate that Drucilla Stone is now living here with her daughter Mary and her unmarried sister, Eliza Small.
  • 1871 map indicates that this home was occupied by Mrs D. L. Stone.
From the evidence provided by this map it would appear that this house is the same as in the photograph which is the same house on Heath Lane today, dating it to 1871 or earlier.
  • September 14, 1880, Drucilla Stone's will left her entire estate, "both real & personal" to her sister Eliza Ann Small for her use during Eliza's natural life.
  • November 8, 1897, the heirs of Drucilla Stone sell the property of Eliza A. Small, lately deceased, to James O. Miller of Baldwin,
  • September 28, 1898, James O. Miller sells this property (containing 30 square rods more or less),to Marshall G. Sanborn

By this date, Marshall Sanborn & Nellie Ridlon Sanborn had been married for about 4 years.

From Marshall Sanborn's obituary... Marshall Gowen Sanborn, born in 1871, died on June 22, 1937. He was the general manager of the cooperage business of A. F. Sanborn & Sons which was founded by his father. Marshall's mother was Annie Marshall Sanborn & he was a native of Limington. He left his wife, Nellie (Ridlon) Sanborn, his step-mother, Mrs. Janie Sanborn, brother Charles, half-brother Guy and several nieces & nephews.
  • 1905 Census lists M. G. Sanborn, station engineer and Nellie E. (Ridlon), housework.
  • 1910 Census lists Marshall G. Sanborn, 39, lumber mill foreman, Nellie Sanborn, 37, and indicates that they had been married for 16 years.
  • May 24, 1919 Sanborn purchased from Henrietta Pierce Watkinson, the vacant lot on the back side of his property, 82 1/2 feet x 100 1/2 feet.
This property was formerly owned by William Pierce Johnson and was at one time being considered for the location of the new Steep Falls Library. The Library was built elsewhere and this lot was sold to Sanborn.
  • February 1, 1966 Nellie Sanborn sold the property to Harold York.
At the time of this sale to Harold York, Nellie had been living here for more than 67 years.

Nellie Sanborn was 97 years old when she died in 1969.
